Creating A Lifestyle Of Worship - Making Space For God

Oftentimes, people have this belief that God is a supernatural being that we believe is real, and that's the end. He is around. He is there for us to talk to when we need something, and He is supposed to do stuff for us when we want Him to. Well, as easy as that sounds, it simply isn't true, and God has been reminding me that having a strong relationship with Him takes effort on our part as well.
Two days ago was my first book club meeting with some young women from church. We just started this book last week (I won't tell you which book until I've read more, haha!), and something that was discussed in our group was how some of us struggle to "make space for God". It's not easy, but we need to have a daily habit of cleaning out our heart and mind for God to take up as much space as He possibly can (which is all the space available). In turn, this creates a lifestyle of worship. For me, this process begins with lots of prayer and reading the Bible. I don't do anything special. I simply get up every day, live my life, and read my Bible and talk to God. Then, as I am praying and reading, God begins to show me things that don't glorify Him - habits I have, objects I own, things I dwell on, etc. I then, every day, weed those things out, slowly, and begin to make space for God.
The next step I take is crucial. I have to guard my heart and mind. This takes practical steps and is an essential part of making space. To make space for the Spirit to move in your life, you must clean up. Nobody is going to walk into your home and walk through it if there are clothes, toys, pieces of trash, and anything else piled high, blocking their way. It's the same concept when we are to make space for God. We should clean up the area first. This includes taking practical steps to get rid of all other sources of input, only allowing God as our main source of input. Put a pause on the shows, music, podcasts, books, news, people, etc., sit in silence, and listen to God and God only. Now, I'm not saying don't ever listen to a podcast again or read a book again or watch a show again, but what I am saying is put them on pause, listen only to God, and slowly start listen to those again as He shows you what outside sources are okay for you to listen to.
The last thing that we will continue to do as the days, weeks, and years go on in this whole process is getting rid of the trash - the sin. This is a daily repentance. I won't go into detail about repentance only because I have another blog post about that. Click here if you want to know more about that.
The more space we make for Him, the more peace, joy, confidence, security, and love we will experience.
That's what He has been reminding me of.
